Habitat
Betterly BAWA Project
2026 Build a Wildlife Aera Project
This 172-acre property is in the core of Wisconsin's wild pheasant range and a priority acquisition area for our state-level strategic plan. This property was at a high risk of development due to its proximity to the town of New Richmond to the northwest.
The future WPA includes 46 acres of wetlands, 105 acres of cropland that will be converted to native prairie, 5 acres of existing native prairie, 10 acres of non-native grassland, and 6 acres of timber. Paperjack Creek, a major tributary to the Willow River (a Class I and II trout stream) meanders through the property.
This parcel is situated within the Star Prairie Complex (which is in the Western Prairie Habitat Restoration Area, as well as the Erin Prairie Bird Conservation Area. It is within ¼ mile of the 486-acre Betterly WPA.
This acquisition was made possible by strong partnerships with WI DNR and USFWS that helped secure funding from the Knowles Nelson Stewardship Fund ($622,000) and NAWCA ($500,000 as part of a DU standard proposal submitted 7/11/2025) a generous land value donation from the seller ($44,000), as well as growing support from incredible PF chapters in Wisconsin and supporters across the country supporting our permanent protection mission by contributing to Build a Wildlife Area!
This property will be donated to USFWS for permanent ownership and stewardship as part of their WPA system once NAWCA funds are disbursed.
Local Habitat Efforts
Kinnickinnic Pheasants Forever's members are truly passionate about creating, preserving and restoring habitat that benefits pheasants, quail and other upland wildlife. PF's unique model empowers our local chapters with the responsibility to determine how 100 percent of our locally-raised conservation funds are spent each year.
Whether it's through improving habitat, informing the public about land management or educating future generations of hunting enthusiasts, conservation is the underlying principle in all we do at the grassroots level.
Preserving our Natural Resources
Creating, restoring, and maintaining habitat is a constant battle. We invite you to join the Kinnickinnic Pheasants Forever of Pheasants Forever in its quest to ensure a country rich in natural resources and long on people willing to work to preserve them. After all, natural resources - pheasants, quail, and other wildlife, plus the land, air, and water on which they live - are our greatest resources.
Local Chapter Projects
Every year the Kinnickinnic Pheasants Forever has on going projects throughout the community. With the proceeds from our annual banquet and donation from all of local sponsors, we are fortunate enough to give back by putting our money in the ground to preserve habitat throughout our region. If you know of a project or would like to learn more about how to help in the effort to preserve your local habitats, please feel free to contact us with any questions.
